Clopay Troy Ohio Plant

Troy Manufacturing Facility Enhancement Will Bring Over 200 New Jobs

Clopay Building Products (“Clopay” or the “Company”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Griffon Corporation (NYSE: GFF), North America’s leading manufacturer and distributor of residential and commercial garage doors, today announced plans to expand its manufacturing facility in Troy, Ohio.

The expansion reflects increased customer demand for its core products, and Clopay’s success in bringing new technologies to market. The project includes improvements to its existing one million square foot building on 85 acres of land, as well as adding 200,000 square feet and new manufacturing equipment.

The State of Ohio and local governments have provided over $16 million in incentives, including low cost financing, tax incentives, and grants for the project. Included in this amount is a $10 million, 10-year, 3% fixed rate loan to purchase equipment. Construction is scheduled to begin this month and to be completed by mid-year 2016. Bruns General Contracting in Tipp City, Ohio has been awarded the construction contract.

Clopay currently employs over 1,000 people in the state of Ohio and plans to add over 200 new jobs at the Troy site by 2019.

“Clopay has a legacy of strong performance and has exceptional potential for growth. By expanding operations at our most technologically advanced facility, we will have the ability to meet future garage door demand and build on our 50-year heritage of innovation and leadership in the garage door industry,” said Clopay President Steve Lynch.

Clopay purchased the Troy plant in 2006 to allow for improved manufacturing efficiencies and new product lines. The successful launch of its energy-efficient polyurethane insulated Intellicoreâ door models in 2008 for both residential and commercial use has contributed to Clopay’s growth in the industry despite a difficult economic backdrop.

“Our state-of-the-art Troy facility benefits from a highly motivated and productive team. We are excited for our employees, the community, and our customers as the expansion will bring new jobs and opportunities for success,” added Lynch. “Clopay is proud to expand in Troy and appreciates the supportive business environment and talented workforce the State of Ohio provides.”

“Clopay’s decision to expand and add over 200 jobs for this highly competitive project shows its confidence in Troy’s community and workforce,” said JobsOhio President and Chief Investment Officer John Minor. “Along with the Dayton Development Coalition, we are excited that this North American industry leader is growing its manufacturing presence here in Ohio.”

“The City of Troy is very proud to be a part of the growth of Clopay Building Products,” said Mayor Michael Beamish. “Clopay is an excellent employer. This expansion will provide over 200 job opportunities for Troy area residents.  We are glad that the City of Troy is able to assist with this important project.”

Clopay entered the garage door business in 1964 with the purchase of Baker-Aldor-Jones of Hialeah, Florida, and the purchase in 1969 of Francis Products in Russia, Ohio. Over the last fifty years, the company has grown to become a recognized leader in the overhead sectional door industry, marketing its building products under the brand names Clopayâ, Holmes Garage Door Companyâ and IDEAL Doorâ.  Clopay owns and operates a network of 50 distribution centers and sells its products to over 2,000 independent professional dealers as well as major home center retail chains.

Sunset Home

Clopay Canyon Ridge® CollectionLimited Edition Series carriage house garage doors are featured on the Sunset Green Home, a sustainable energy-efficient new home construction project recently completed on Long Island, New York.

After Hurricane Sandy destroyed Kim Erle’s house on October 29, 2012, her only choice was to rebuild. Instead of simply making modifications to meet the new building codes, she decided to go above and beyond and build the coastal home of the future – a highly efficient, resilient house that would stand up to future storms and serve as a model for responsible building practices. Her efforts resulted in the Sunset Green Home.

The new residence is a sustainable, energy-efficient project registered through the LEED for Homes green building program with a certification goal of LEED Platinum.

Erle selected Clopay Canyon Ridge Collection faux wood garage doors for the house because they offer the best combination of style, energy-efficiency, and low-maintenance durability.

New building codes implemented after Hurricane Sandy mandate that homes be built 12 feet above sea level. The Sunset Green Home sits atop pilings and the garage is located underneath it in a flood plain.

While the Canyon Ridge door’s wood-grain composite cladding looks like real wood, the material won’t rot, warp or crack, which is important if there is a flood.

The door’s three-layer Intellicore® insulation contributes to the door’s rigidity and strength. “During Hurricane Sandy, large pieces of debris were pushed by the storm surge into the foundation and siding of the old home,” said Erle. “A non-insulated door does not have the same ability to withstand denting as an insulated garage door.”

She selected LiftMaster 8550 Elite Series openers with battery back-up so her family can open the garage doors during a power outage.

A Better Door managed the installation of the garage doors and openers for the project.

Move over plain vanilla garage doors. Clopay is inviting builders and remodelers to re-imagine the garage door as more than a functional necessity to protect our cars and our stuff.

During the 2016 International Builders’ Show (IBS), the residential garage door manufacturer will showcase contemporary designs and traditional carriage house doors constructed in a variety of materials alongside fiberglass entry door models to complement them.

"Garage doors have a significant impact on a home’s curb appeal, especially if they face the street, as is the case in many parts of the country where builders are working with narrow lot sizes,” says Pat Lohse, Clopay’s vice president of marketing. “Each Clopay door is built-to-order so it can be customized to accommodate wide and tall sizes, unique panel designs, rare wood species, bold color finishes, specialty glass, and more. With our complementing entry door line, builders and homeowners can coordinate the two main entrances of the home to make a stunning design statement.”

Amid the continued and growing demand for contemporary design, Clopay is highlighting its Modern Steel collection, which includes garage doors that feature clean lines, large expanses of glass, and custom colors.

Clopay Modern Steel Collection doors have a durable, three-layer insulated construction with optional Intellicore® polyurethane foam insulation, providing an 18.4 R-value, and Clopay’s WindCode® Storm-Ready® reinforcement for coastal and high wind regions. Grooved and flush panel designs are available.

In addition, Clopay will debut a new custom panel design for its popular Avante Collection aluminum and glass garage door, demonstrating how the stiles and rails can be adjusted to add visual interest and control the amount of daylight that enters the garage.

“Clopay garage doors and entry doors meet homeowners’ expectations for low maintenance, energy-efficient exterior products that are functional, fashionable, and customizable,” adds Lohse.

Clopay® Garage Doors Selected for Modernism Week Show House 2016: The Christopher Kennedy Compound

Modernism Home - Avante

Noted Palm Springs designer Christopher Kennedy has selected Clopay Avante Collection glass garage doors for the 2016 Modernism Week Show House: The Christopher Kennedy Compound.

Situated on the fairway of Indian Canyons Golf resort, a favorite of Rat Pack-era Hollywood stars like Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope, the 2016 Christopher Kennedy Compound has been reimagined for modern Southern California living by Kennedy and a roster of celebrity designers including Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Bravo’s Carson Kressley, Michel Boyd, HGTV’s Jamie Durie and Kelli Ellis, Justin Shaulis, Style Blogger Kelly Golightly, Trellis Home, Bradshaw Orrell and more.

“My goal with The Christopher Kennedy Compound is to celebrate Palm Springs architecture in its heyday,” explains Kennedy, “while updating a swanky vintage house for the realities of modern living, using the best of today’s technology.”

The attached garage is an architectural focal point of the ranch style home. Kennedy chose Avante Collection overhead doors with black anodized aluminum frames and opaque glass panels to complement the home’s clean lines and white exterior. The doors let natural light inside the space during the day without compromising privacy. At night, they emit a warm glow, much like the home’s desert surround just before sunset.

The Christopher Kennedy Compound is open for public tours during Modernism Week, an annual event celebrating Palm Springs’ legacy of midcentury modern architecture. Presented by media sponsors Traditional Home and California Homes magazines, the event attracts more than 40,000 visitors.

Clopay Canyon Ridge® Collection Limited Edition Series garage doors will be featured on Season 4 of “The Vanilla Ice Project”, which airs Saturdays at 10 p.m. ET on the DIY Network beginning March 8.

This is the third time Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, has approached residential garage door manufacturer Clopay in search of trendsetting carriage house style doors to maximize the curb appeal of a Florida mansion in need of a top-to-bottom transformation.

Van Winkle, best-known for his “Ice Ice Baby” rap song in 1989, has been a real estate investor for the past 15 years, renovating and flipping homes.

“The Vanilla Ice Project” is a home renovation show that began in 2009. The series follows Van Winkle as he strips down distressed properties to the bare bones and reimagines them for resale in the Palm Beach real estate market. Each episode focuses on a new room and new project – from custom woodwork and kitchen design, to exterior remodeling and pool renovation.

Audiences who have tuned in to the series during previous seasons may be surprised by the style of this house. Van Winkle is partial to the Canyon Ridge Collection faux wood carriage house style garage doors because of their realistic beauty and low-maintenance durability. But the traditional architecture forced him to choose a different design and cladding species than he has used in the past. Clopay dealer Broten Garage Door managed the installation.

Season 4 of “The Vanilla Ice Project” will chronicle the 3,000 sq. ft. mansion makeover over nine weeks beginning March 8. For episode details and air times, visit the DIY Network at http://www.diynetwork.com/the-vanilla-ice-project/show/index.html.

Clopay® Garage Doors Add Historic Charm to a New Farmhouse on THIS OLD HOUSE® Television Series

North Shore home with This Old House

Clopay recently partnered with D&D Garage Door Company in Methuen, Mass. to install carriage house garage doors for a unique project on TV’s This Old House.

This season, the crew followed a young couple as they created their dream home—not by renovating an old structure, but by choosing a 19th-century-style farmhouse from a catalog.

Realizing that neither a custom build nor buying a thoroughly renovated old house was in their price range, the couple decided to purchase a house from Connor Homes, a company in Middlebury, Vermont, that specializes in a type of mill-built reproduction home-building process called panelization.

The house was made at the Vermont factory, and the pieces—wall panels, windows, doors, joists, roofing—were bundled, stacked, and shipped to the a wooded lot where a local contractor assembled them.

For the barn-style garage, the homeowners selected Clopay Reserve® Wood Collection Limited Edition Series insulated carriage house doors constructed in cedar and factory stained. The doors look like they swing open, but they roll up and down with an automatic opener.

The goal of this season was to show how it's possible to get old-house charm from scratch with new materials. The end result is a new home that looks like it's been there for at least a century.

In addition to being chronicled on the television series, the North Shore Farmhouse project highlights are featured online at www.thisoldhouse.com.

As the exclusive garage and entry door sponsor, Clopay provided multiple doors for the this year’s Urban Oasis. Quality Overhead Door in Toledo, Ohio managed the installation.

Clopay® Garage Doors Celebrates Two Decades as a Good Housekeeping Seal Holder

Coachman Collection by Clopay

Residential garage door brand Clopay is celebrating 20 years as a Good Housekeeping Seal holder. Clopay garage doors first earned the distinction in 1996.

Most people perceive the Seal to be a product endorsement, but in fact it symbolizes a two-year warranty. The Seal means that Good Housekeeping will replace or refund defective products up to $2,000 within two years of purchase, regardless of what type of warranty is offered by the manufacturer or dealer. The promise is unique in the marketplace.

Launched in 1909, GHI has the distinction of being the oldest consumer product-testing lab of its size in America.

Each new Clopay garage door model is reviewed by scientists, engineers, and technicians at the Good Housekeeping Institute to ensure it meets their stringent standards for product integrity.

Just because a product is on the market doesn’t mean it works or does what it claims. “That’s why consumers are assured when they see the Good Housekeeping Seal. They know these products will deliver on their promise,” says Pat Lohse, Clopay’s vice president of marketing. “A garage door is a significant purchase that most homeowners make once in a lifetime. They want peace of mind knowing that they are investing their dollars in a product that is durable, safe and secure.”

Study Shows Clopay® Garage Doors Rank First with Single Family Detached Builders

Gallery Press Release

Clopay is the best-selling garage door brand among single family detached home builders nationwide, according to the 2016 Brand Usage Study conducted by Professional Builder INSIGHT in partnership with Home Innovation Research Labs.

Home Innovation Research Labs (HI) is a veteran of research in the new home construction arena and has been conducting research on market sizes and brand shares of building materials for decades.

The market shares reported are based on actual volume of units sold in the new homes market.

Of the more than 1.1 million garage doors installed in new homes built in 2015, Clopay was the category leader in total Single‐Family Detached (SFD) homes.

Builders responding to the Annual Builder Practices Survey self‐categorized the SFD homes they built in 2015 as either Starter, Move‐up, or Luxury. Across these price‐point categories, Clopay was the market leader for Starter and Luxury homes.

Single‐Family Detached homes were also analyzed by builder size. Small builders are defined as having built 10 or fewer homes per year, Medium builders 11 to 50 homes per year, and Large builders more than 50 homes per year. Again, Clopay was number one in all three categories.

Clopay offers an extensive portfolio of overhead sectional garage doors constructed in wood, steel, composite, and glass. The residential garage door manufacturer is continuing to introduce innovative new products like the Modern Steel Collection, the Canyon Ridge® Ultra-Grain Series, and Intellicore® insulation technology, which appeal to builders in a broad range of price points.

According to the results, baby boomers purchasing a new home are looking for affordable, high-quality construction in a location convenient to shopping, dining, medical services, and entertainment, an open layout with plenty of natural light, sufficient storage, and sustainable and energy-efficient technology.

Clopay’s Modern Steel Collection garage door is the perfect choice to meet their preferences for personalized design, performance, and convenience.

The door features a durable, three-layer construction with optional polyurethane foam insulation, providing an energy-efficient 18.4 R-value. The available grooved and flush panel designs can be customized with a number of glass options for a fresh, edgy feel. Insulated doors with built-in reinforcement and impact-rated glass have both Florida and Miami-Dade product approvals.

“The garage door is the largest moving part on a home and often one of the most overlooked and underappreciated by its owner. That certainly isn’t the case for 2017 BUILDER NEXTAdventure home. In fact, the garage door is one of the first things people see when they arrive since it makes up a large part of the home’s front elevation,” says Clopay’s vice president of marketing Pat Lohse.

Architect Deryl Patterson, AIA, took advantage of the garage door’s wide expanse to incorporate the modern aesthetic seen elsewhere on the home and heighten its curb appeal.

Patterson selected a grooved panel Modern Steel design with a custom five-window layout. The factory-painted Desert Tan door and narrow Reed glass windows allow natural light into the garage without compromising privacy. The sleek, minimalist style is a perfect complement to other details on the home and adds visual interest to the home’s attached two-car garage.

“Contemporary curb appeal doesn’t end with entry doors and windows. The size and number of garage doors on today’s homes make it an equally important design consideration,” says Clopay vice president of marketing Pat Lohse. “Clopay’s Modern Steel door meets a growing consumer demand for garage doors with clean lines, large expanses of glass, and custom finishes, and provides tremendous value in terms of affordability and easy maintenance.”

Insulated Garage Doors Lower Energy Costs, Improve Comfort Year-Round

Sustainable, energy-efficient products are also important to 55+ home buyers. Once again, as the barrier to the largest opening on a house, the garage door plays an important role in improving a home’s energy efficiency as well as preserving its structural integrity during a storm.

According to a comparison study conducted by Clopay engineers, replacing an older garage door with a new, insulated model can reduce energy loss through the garage by up to 71%.

Since attached garages like the one on the NEXTadventure home share common walls with the house, any hot or cold that travels through the garage door will ultimately affect the adjacent living areas.  The Modern Steel garage door’s three-layer, two-inch thick polyurethane insulated construction will help stabilize temperatures to reduce heat losses or gains year round.

Hurricanes Don’t Stand a Chance Against a Reinforced Garage Door

Sustainability takes on new meaning in hurricane prone regions like Florida. Property damage analysis from past hurricanes shows that the garage door is often the first thing to go in a storm. The good news is that the largest moving part on a home can be one of the easiest to reinforce.

Two kinds of reinforced garage doors are available. An “add-on” system requires homeowners to install floor to ceiling posts behind the garage door to reinforce it before the storm hits, and then remove them again afterwards to resume normal operation.

Clopay WindCode® garage doors are Storm-Ready®, meaning no add-on posts are needed to secure the door. Reinforcement is built into the structure of the door and engaged by simply locking it, a timesaving convenience in the event of a sudden evacuation notice.

This type of door is particularly beneficial to vacation home and rental property owners because they have peace of mind knowing that the garage door is secure as long as it’s locked.

Reinforced garage doors are available in many different styles including traditional, carriage house, and contemporary designs.

Clopay insulated Modern Steel Collection garage doors with impact-rated glass have Florida and Miami-Dade product approvals, which means homeowners can have a stylish garage door without sacrificing safety.

Depending on the grain and stain finish, these faux wood doors are a perfect complement to other natural elements on a home’s exterior.

The energy-efficient, two-inch thick polyurethane foam insulated garage doors are available in Clear Cypress or Mahogany cladding with a choice of three stain colors or a painted white finish. Sizes range from 6’2” up to 20’2” wide in heights up to 10’. The Canyon Ridge Modern Series will be available in February.

With the International Builders’ Show’s return to Florida this year, storm-ready products are top of mind. Clopay’s Modern Steel Collection garage door is one of several on display that proves designers don’t have to sacrifice style to meet strict residential building codes.

The insulated grooved and flush panel designs can be customized with a number of impact-rated decorative glass options for a fresh, edgy feel.

Reinforced full view glass doors and doors with windows down one side have Florida and Miami-Dade product approvals, opening up new possibilities for integrating the garage into contemporary coastal home exteriors.

A plantation style, louvered Reserve® Wood Collection garage door featured on the 2017 New American Remodeled Home by Phil Kean Designs will be on display to demonstrate Clopay’s limitless custom door capabilities.
