Clopay’s Avante Collection aluminum and glass garage door has been named one of the Top 100 Products of 2017 by Professional Remodeler magazine.
Clopay Avante Collection

Each year, Professional Remodeler’s Top 100 tallies up reader engagement in the building materials, doors, windows, fixtures, and fittings that have appeared in the magazine over the past 12 months, to determine which products generated the strongest interest. The results appear in the August issue.

Clopay’s Avante Collection contemporary glass garage door admits natural light during the day, and provides a warm glow at night. A choice of tempered glass options ensures the right degree of daylight and privacy.

The door is constructed with a 2-1/8" thick commercial grade aluminum frame to be virtually maintenance-free. Many sizes and frame colors are offered, as is insulated glass. Solid aluminum panels that match the frame are also available.

Clopay began marketing the Avante for residential applications in 2004, when contemporary garage door design options were extremely limited. More than a decade later, it continues to be a top choice for architects and builders looking for ways to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living spaces and carry a modern, open concept design theme all the way to the garage.

The Avante Collection has been featured on numerous showcase homes, most recently, on the 2017 New American Home in Orlando, designed by award-winning architect Phil Kean.

CINCINNATI (September 22, 2017) -- Clopay® Canyon Ridge® Collection Limited Edition Series faux wood garage doors are featured on the This Old House 2017 Idea House, a one-of-a-kind coastal home in South Kingstown, RI.

The three-story shingle-style, gambrel-roof home highlights innovative building techniques and durable, weatherproof, energy-efficient materials for coastal building.

This Old House produced the project in partnership with Wakefield-based Sweenor Builders, Union Studio Architecture & Community Design, and Denise Enright Interior Design.

The finished house will be revealed in the October issue of This Old House and online at thisoldhouse.com on September 22nd. It will also appear in several episodes of the upcoming 39th season of This Old House premiering on PBS this fall.

The design build team selected Clopay Canyon Ridge Collection Limited Edition Series Intellicore® insulated faux wood carriage house doors with built-in WindCode® reinforcement for the home’s two-car attached garage. Marathon Door and Glass in Hopedale, Massachusetts managed the installation.

The Canyon Ridge composite cladding looks like real wood, but it won’t rot, warp or crack, which is an important benefit for exterior products installed in a damp, four-season coastal environment. The boards are molded from real wood pieces to replicate the grain pattern and natural texture, and they can be painted or stained.

This old house with Canyon Ridge Clopay garage door

Sustainability equally important to style and function in the Idea House product selection criteria. Besides improving energy efficiency and comfort in the garage, the Canyon Ridge door’s five-layer construction and two-inch thick polyurethane foam insulated steel core increases its strength and rigidity.

And, Clopay WindCode garage doors are Storm-Ready®, meaning there is no need to add posts or additional reinforcement to secure the door during a hurricane. Reinforcement is built in and engaged by simply locking it. This feature gives vacation home and rental property owners peace of mind in knowing that the garage door is secure as long as it’s locked.

Clopay WindCode garage doors are available in many different styles including traditional, carriage house, and contemporary designs. Consult your local Clopay dealer for building code requirements in your area.

The three-layer Intellicore® construction features environmentally safe CFC- and HCFC-free polyurethane insulation, foam injected between two layers of galvanized steel, with a thermal break, to provide an R-value of 18.4.

The polyurethane foam insulation fills the entire steel frame making the door stronger and quieter. The interior and exterior door panels are primed and coated with a baked-on polyester paint finish for a durable, low-maintenance, rust-resistant surface.

Doors 36’2” and wider come standard with Clopay’s new High-Performance Hardware. Designed to meet the extreme demands of a larger, heavier door in high-cycle environments, High-Performance Hardware kits include 3” sealed rollers with a 5/8” diameter stem, 10-gauge steel end hinges, and heavy-duty top brackets.

The High-Performance end hinge features a proprietary graduated design that can be adjusted to fit the roller position as needed, depending on where the hinge is placed on the door.

Before and After shot of a garage door makeover for January 2018 ImagineNATION contest

Clopay launched the imagineNATION Makeover Contest in June of 2016. Homeowners who have replaced their garage door or entry door can submit before and after photos for a chance to win $1,000. One winner is chosen each month. The installing Clopay dealer also wins $250 if their customer's home is selected.

The contest was scheduled to end in December, but Clopay decided to continue it through December 31, 2018 based on the growing number of entries and positive feedback from customers.

"Real-life makeovers are a powerful tool to inspire homeowners to update their home's curb appeal with a new garage door or front door," says Pat Lohse, Clopay's vice-president of marketing. "In the majority of the entries, a designer isn't involved. People see these transformations and think, "'If that person can do it, so can I!'"

All Clopay imagineNATION Makeover Contest entries are featured on the imagineNATION community page. Monthly winners are spotlighted on Clopay's blog and social media sites. Click here for details on how to enter and the complete rules.

Study Shows Garage Door Replacement Pays You Back the Most at Resale

French country style house before and after with carriage house style garage doors from Clopay.
CINCINNATI (March 13, 2018) -- Findings in REMODELING magazine's 2018 Cost vs. Value Report show that replacing a garage door not only improves a home's curb appeal, the project generates the best return-on-investment (ROI) when it comes to recouping cost at resale.

The report indicates that spending $3,470 for an upscale garage door replacement can yield an estimated $3,411 at resale - a 98.3 percent return on investment.

In 46 of the 100 individual markets, an upscale garage door replacement actually recoups more than 100 percent of its cost.

Now in its 31st year, the annual Cost vs. Value Report compares costs for 20 of the most popular professional mid-range and upscale remodeling projects in 100 U.S. markets to how much real estate professionals believe the investment will improve a home's resale value.

The average payback nationwide for the 20 projects in the 2018 Report ranges from as high as 98.3% to as low as 47.6%, depending on the type of project.

The three projects with the highest year-over-year increase in value are "curb appeal" projects - work that can be seen from the street: garage door replacement (up 18.6%), wood deck additions (up 17.7%) and manufactured stone veneer installation (up 15.7%).

Garage door replacement ranks high because it is relatively inexpensive, yet it has a significant impact on a home's curb appeal and perceived value, especially if there are multiple doors facing the street. Realtors say, if shoppers don't like what they see from the curb, chances are they won't waste time going inside.

Garage Door Appearance Impacts Value

Garage door replacement tops the list of home improvement with the best return on investment at resale, but homeowners hoping to get the biggest bang for their buck need to invest their upgrade dollars wisely by choosing a design that fits the architectural style and price point of their home.

In January, residential garage door manufacturer Clopay partnered with an independent research firm to conduct a nationwide survey to gauge realtor perceptions about the garage door category, and to determine if garage door appearance made a difference in the listing price they would assign to a house. Here's what they said:

  • 70% of Realtors agree that a new garage door helps sell a home faster.
  • Over 80% of Realtors believe a new garage door can impact home value.

Realtors viewed before and after images of different homes featuring a variety of garage door styles ranging in price from inexpensive to high-end. Respondents were asked to assign a selling price to each of the houses and were alerted that the only difference in the photos of each house was the garage door.. Respondents were asked to assign a selling price to each of the houses and were alerted that the only difference in the photos of each house was the garage door.

Realtors estimate that upgrading a garage door can increase the perceived selling price of a home by up to 4%, depending on the style. With the average U.S. home price estimated at $206,300 in 2017, this can mean an incremental increase of $8,000 to $14,000, just because of the garage door.

Like flooring, cabinets, countertops and appliances, garage doors have evolved from functional to fashionable. Homebuyers see nicer garage door designs on TV, on showcase homes, and in new residential developments and they expect their home to be on trend.

Hiring a design professional is one way to get the right look. Another option is using an online visualization tool like Clopay's Door Imagination System. Homeowners upload a digital photo of their home to Clopay's website to try on and customize any of the garage door styles the company offers until they find the perfect match.

"Seeing the impact different garage door designs have on their home gives buyers more confidence in their decision, better curb appeal, and the potential for a better return on investment long-term," says Pat Lohse, vice president of marketing for Clopay.

Griffon Corporation Announces Acquisition of CornellCookson by Clopay Building Products

Clopay joins forces with CornellCookson

CINCINNATI (May 3, 2018) -- Griffon Corporation (“Griffon”) (NYSE: GFF) today announced that its subsidiary, Clopay Building Products (CPB), has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase CornellCookson, a leading manufacturer of rolling steel doors and grilles, for $180 million. After taking into account tax benefits resulting from the transaction, the effective purchase price is approximately $170 million.

The proposed acquisition significantly enhances Clopay’s scale in the sale of commercial and industrial doors by broadening its portfolio of products and customers.

“We are excited to add CornellCookson to the Clopay Building Products family,” said CPB president Steve Lynch. “They have an impeccable reputation for quality products, strong customer relationships, and an excellent management team. This is a strategic opportunity to bring two outstanding brands together, to better serve our customers with a complementary portfolio of products that is one of the most comprehensive in the commercial door industry.”

CornellCookson produces custom closure solutions found in stadiums, hospitals, hotels, museums, retail businesses, parking garages, and schools and universities. These include roll up doors, fire doors, security doors, accordion doors, and safety gates and grilles.

“Clopay is an organization whose values and culture align with our own,” said CornellCookson president Andrew Cornell. “We are both U.S. owned and operated companies looking for opportunities to expand. Clopay doesn’t make coiling doors, and Cornell doesn’t make overhead sectional garage doors. This acquisition is focused on growth and value. Our two companies working together, with the capital support of Griffon Corporation, is going to benefit our employees, our customers, and the industry. I wouldn’t be making this decision if I didn’t firmly believe it was in the best interest of our stakeholders.”

CornellCookson is expected to generate $200 million in net sales during its first year as part of CBP. The company operates facilities in Mountain Top, Pa. and Goodyear, Ariz., and has over 750 employees. Its brands have operated in the United States since 1828 and 1938. Products are sold through a network of more than 700 Cornell and Cookson dealers primarily to customers in North America and Mexico. The transaction is expected to be completed in June 2018, subject to customary closing conditions, including applicable regulatory approvals.

Following closing of the transaction, the two companies will continue to operate as they currently do, with Andrew Cornell serving as president of CornellCookson, reporting to Steve Lynch, president of Clopay Building Products.

There are no immediate plans to change the brand strategies for CornellCookson or Clopay. Both companies will maintain operations at their respective facilities.

September 2018 winner

Residential garage door manufacturer Clopay is extending its imagineNATION Makeover Contest through 2019.

Homeowners who have replaced their garage door or entry door can submit before and after photos to the Clopay imagineNATION Makeover Contest for a chance to win $1,000.

Clopay will choose one winning makeover per month through December 31, 2019. Once an entry is received, it stays in the selection pool for the duration of the contest. There is no need to re-enter. Before and after photos can be uploaded directly to the imagineNATION Contest entry page (https://www.clopaydoor.com/imaginenation-contest-entry) for consideration. “Clopay launched the imagineNATION contest in June 2016 to showcase the impact a new garage door or entry door has on a home’s curb appeal,” said Pat Lohse, Clopay’s vice president of marketing. “We’ve built up an impressive gallery of before and after images (https://www.clopaydoor.com/imaginenation-garage-door-photos) on our contest community page to inspire homeowners who are looking for ideas to transform their exterior.”

“Professional garage door installation takes less than a day to complete. It’s a fast, affordable change that has an immediate impact on a home’s curb appeal and its resale value,” added Lohse.

In a nationwide survey conducted by an independent research firm on behalf of Clopay, 80 percent of realtors polled believe that a new garage door favorably impacts home value, and can potentially increase the listing price up to 4 percent.*

Garage door replacement also ranks as the No. 1 project for return-on-investment at resale in Remodeling magazine’s 2018 Cost vs. Value Report.**

“Realtors agree that curb appeal brings buyers through the door. If they don’t like the view from the outside, they probably won’t ever see the inside,” Lohse said. “Whether replacing your garage door is a planned project or an accidental one, there are so many new styles and colors you can choose to make your home stand out. It just takes a little time and imagineNATION.”

Clopay Avante Collection on The New American Home

Clopay Avante Collection glass garage doors will be featured on The New American Home debuting at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas February 19 – 21, 2019.

This is the fifth year that Clopay has sponsored the project in partnership with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Professional Builder magazine.

Sun West Custom Homes is building the home in Ascaya, a luxury hillside community in Henderson, known for its unobstructed views of the mountains and Vegas Strip.

Dan Coletti, president of Sun West, is excited to showcase what he describes as never-before-seen architecture that pushes the boundaries of “open concept” and “indoor-outdoor living.”

“The abundant use of oversized windows and moving glass doors on all sides of the house will make it hard to tell where the home’s interior ends and the outside begins,” said Coletti, whose company is also overseeing design. Clopay’s glass panel garage door design blends seamlessly with the rest of the exterior.

Sun West Custom Homes is known to push the envelope when it comes to designing, building and equipping residences with state-of-the-art, as well as experimental features. On this home, the garage is one of those standout features.

According to Coletti, buyers who purchase custom homes at this level have an affinity for exotic cars, and the New American Home 2019 has them covered.

Outfitted with two 18’ x 8’ Clopay Avante Collection doors, the finished four-car garage will not only serve as a collector’s showroom visible from various locations throughout the house, it also doubles as an air-conditioned game room.

At the press of a button, the garage doors open, creating extra room for guests. Closed, they become an attractive wall of windows, and provide a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

Sun West specified mirrored glass panels to let daylight into the garage without compromising privacy. Alcal Specialty Contracting managed the door installation.

The New American Home 2019 will be open daily for tours during the International Builders’ Show.

Clopay® Adds “Slate” Faux Woodgrain Finish Option to Garage Doors

Slate Finish Introduction Products

Clopay’s new “Slate” faux woodgrain finish option is now available on the Canyon Ridge®, Gallery® and Modern Steel garage door collections.

Faux wood garage doors are a popular choice with homeowners who want the warmth and character of real wood without the upkeep.

Clopay’s standard faux woodgrain finish colors have been firmly grounded in shades of brown, ranging from warm medium Oak to rich Cherry to dark Walnut.

Now, as window, siding, and door manufacturers expand their color palettes to include black and charcoal, Clopay has followed suit with Slate, a multi-dimensional finish that can appear rustic or modern, depending on the grain pattern and door style.

Clopay introduced the color at the 2018 International Builders’ Show to the delight of builders and designers looking for garage doors to complement the dark exterior colors schemes their customers want.

Slate is a medium gray hue with undertones of black and khaki that emulate the light and dark shades found in naturally weathered wood.

Thanks to the tri-color technology used to create the finish, Slate blends with a broad range of colors and materials. Whether it’s paired with a white board and batten farmhouse exterior with black window frames, a traditional red brick exterior, or a light color stucco and stone, a Slate garage door adds texture, contrast, and personality to the façade.

Slate is available on specific Clopay carriage house and contemporary door models including the Canyon Ridge Collection Limited Edition Series, the Canyon Ridge Ultra-Grain® Series, the Canyon Ridge Modern Series, the Gallery Collection, and the Modern Steel Collection. All of the doors are available with Intellicore® insulation for added strength, energy efficiency, and quiet operation.

Clopay introduces QuietFlex hinge

Garage door manufacturer Clopay is introducing a 14 ga steel QuietFlex Hinge designed to be two times quieter than a standard metal hinge during normal door operation.

The new QuietFlex Hinge features self-lubricating nylon bushings that help eliminate metal to metal contact on the hinge, reducing noise, door binding, and daily wear and tear when the door is opened and closed.

“The first thing customers notice about a new garage door is the smooth, quiet operation,” said Justin Evans, Clopay Director of Residential Products. “Regular maintenance can easily quiet a noisy door, but homeowners want long-lasting products with less upkeep. The QuietFlex Hinge is going to operate more quietly over time and perform better, especially on heavy doors.”

The QuietFlex Hinge is available as an upgrade on all Clopay residential garage door models, including WindCode®, and comes standard as part of Clopay’s Gold Bar Warranty package.

Clopay® Extira® Offers Custom Wood Beauty in a Worry-Free, Weather-Resistant Paint-Grade Material

ExtiraGroup

Clopay has added a new low-maintenance wood-look door option to its residential product line.

Extira, an exterior-rated weather-resistant wood composite, is now available on the Reserve Wood® Collection Custom and Limited Edition Series paint-grade doors.

Made from eco-friendly materials, Extira is moisture, rot, and termite resistant, offering superior performance to paint-grade materials like MDF and many wood species.

It carves, routs, and fastens like natural wood, and has a perfectly smooth surface free of knots or voids, allowing for detailed craftsmanship and a fine, furniture quality paint finish homeowners expect in a premium carriage style garage door.

The density of the substrate makes it easy to incorporate deep V-groove patterns with defined edges, like a Chevron, or arches, to achieve a natural wood look that just isn’t possible with molded material. Because of its inherent strength, Extira won’t crack or split.

Extira doors are typically built in three sections instead of four, resulting in proportionally larger windows, which many homeowners, architects, and builders prefer.

The door has a 4-layer polystyrene insulated construction. Extira cladding and overlays are applied to the exterior face of a 2”-thick hemlock frame base. A luan woodgrain backer gives the interior of the door a finished look, and can be painted or stained.

Extira can be painted any color including black. Standard Clopay windows styles, specialty glass, and decorative hardware are available, as are custom designs. Learn more at https://www.clopaydoor.com/reserve#Designs.

Clopay® Unveils New Pedestrian Pass Door Design for Commercial Overhead Sectional Steel Doors

Clopay Commercial New Pass Door

Clopay has updated its commercial pass door with an enhanced interior reinforcement system that improves both aesthetics and performance.

The 32” x 80” pass door has an aluminum frame construction with a shiplap design to provide a durable, weather-resistant seal. A continuous boxed channel bottom rail strengthens the door against wind and horizontal deflection, and a rain cap stops water from accumulating around the opening.

The door opens and closes with a geared hinge to ensure smooth operation and longevity. The interior and exterior are primed and coated with a baked-on polyester paint finish for a low-maintenance, rust-resistant surface.”

“By reinforcing the pass door from the inside, we were able to eliminate a weld joint on the exterior aluminum frame to give the entire unit a sleeker, seamless appearance,” says Clopay commercial product manager Jill Dodson. “The new design is a win for both form and function.”

A pedestrian pass door is ideal for applications where a standard entry door cannot be installed because of space limitations. It helps saves on heating and cooling costs by reducing the number of times the main overhead door needs to be opened and closed.

“Fewer operating cycles means less wear and tear on the springs and hardware and lower maintenance costs over time. Combine our pass door with our overhead sectional steel door construction and insulation options and there is a real opportunity for building managers and specifiers to save on operating costs,” adds Dodson.

The new design is available on Clopay commercial models 3720, 3722, 3724, 3200 and 3220 with a ribbed design, up to 16’2” wide x 16’ tall.

Clopay Reserve Wood Black Louver Design FL

The number of hurricane-rated Clopay garage doors approved for use in Miami-Dade County, Fla. is growing.

Clopay’s Reserve Wood Collection custom series, Wood Limited Edition Series, and Modern Series Wood overhead sectional garage doors with built-in WindCode® reinforcement and impact-resistant glazing are approved for residential use in Miami-Dade in widths up to 9’ and design pressure ratings up to +47/-55.

Recognized as one of the strictest building codes in the country, Miami-Dade County requires manufacturers to test garage doors to perform under the highest missile impact standard and cyclic pressure.

Impact-rated garage doors and windows are engineered to withstand flying debris and projectiles from hurricane-force winds along with air pressures that can potentially pull the door out of the opening.

Approved Clopay Reserve Wood Collection garage door models with WindCode reinforcement can withstand the direct impact of a 9 lb. 2” x 4” board, traveling at a speed of 50 feet per second (34 mph). The doors also continued to operate under positive and negative wind loads for 9,000 cycles, with the impact creating no hole larger than 1/16 x 5” in the interlayer of the glass.

Impact-resistance combined with a high design pressure rating makes a garage door more resilient before, during, and after a storm.

In addition to the Miami-Dade NOA, select designs and sizes in Clopay’s Reserve Wood Collection line also have Florida Building Code product approvals in sizes from 9’2” up to 16’2” wide.

Clopay has a total of 45 Miami-Dade NOAs. For more information on Clopay WindCode and impact-rated garage doors, visit https://www.clopaydoor.com/residential/windcode-residential-information.

Southern Living Idea Home

CINCINNATI (July 19, 2019) – Clopay Canyon Ridge® Collection Limited Edition Series doors are front and center on the Southern Living 2019 Idea House, a grand, “new-old house” set in a stand of oak trees and palmettos along the Intracoastal Waterway in Amelia Island, Florida.

The 2019 Idea House combines the best of Southern architecture – stacked porches, stately columns, and large windows to take in the breathtaking water views.

Project architect Clay Rokicki wanted an old-fashioned wood-look carriage house garage door to fit the home’s historic style, but knew it required a high-performance material that could meet the demands of Florida’s coastal environment.

With plenty of design options, a moisture-resistant composite construction, authentic woodgrain texture, and built-in WindCode® reinforcement, Clopay’s Canyon Ridge Collection was the obvious choice. Clopay Master Authorized Dealer, D and D Garage Doors in Jacksonville, Fla., managed the installation.

Rokicki selected Design 11 with a single row of vertical windows that mimic the shape of those seen elsewhere on the house.

The design/build team was happy to learn that Clopay could also custom build a small overhead door in the same design and material as the main garage doors to house the owner’s golf cart.

The 2019 Idea House is featured in the August issue of Southern Living magazine, and is open for public tours now through December 8. The finished house plans, Crane Island River House, Plan #2010, can be purchased online at Houseplans.SouthernLiving.com.

“With the recent acquisition of CornellCookson, we wanted to provide a fresh perspective on our diverse brand and product lines, and strengthen the sense of unity among our ever-growing family of associates,” said Clopay Corporation president Steve Lynch. "The name change allows us to present ourselves as the most comprehensive residential and commercial door solutions company with the best selection and service in the category. It clearly communicates our vision of the future to new employees and new customers—while retaining the strength and heritage of our industry-leading brand.”

Clopay Corporation will continue to market and distribute its products under the brand names Clopay®, CornellCookson®, Holmes Garage Door Company® and IDEAL Door®, as well as Clopay residential entry door systems. The name change does not affect operations or ownership of the company.

“Our commitment to our customers’ success remains our highest priority," Lynch added. “The foundation of our company—the people, exceptional quality and innovative design of our products—all remain intact and stronger than ever. In fact, we're taking this name change opportunity to reinforce our mission to promote customer success by providing superior experiences, products and solutions.”

The new name is effective immediately and will be implemented across the company's communications throughout 2019 and into 2020.

Clopay entered the garage door business in 1964 with the purchase of Baker-Aldor-Jones of Hialeah, Florida and the purchase in 1969 of Francis Products in Russia, Ohio. Over the last 55 years, the company has grown to become a recognized leader in the residential and commercial overhead sectional door industry.

In 2006, Clopay centralized manufacturing and distribution operations at its most technologically advanced 1.2 million sq. ft. facility in Troy, Ohio. Four years later, Clopay became the first manufacturer to offer ENERGY STAR qualified entry door systems designed to complement its residential garage doors, prompting the expansion of specialty door operations to its original Russia, Ohio plant.

Clopay increased its scale in the commercial door sector in 2018 when it acquired CornellCookson, the leading manufacturer of industrial rolling steel doors found in stadiums, hospitals, hotels, museums, retail businesses, parking garages, and schools and universities. These include roll up doors, fire doors, security doors, accordion doors, and safety gates and grilles made and distributed from state-of-the-art facilities in Mountain Top, Pa. and Goodyear, Ariz.

Clopay Corporation owns and operates a nationwide network of 51 distribution centers and sells its products to over 3,000 independent professional dealers as well as major home center retail chains in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Throughout its history, Clopay has been at the forefront of many of the garage door industry’s major advancements. Today, the company offers the most complete portfolio of residential and commercial overhead sectional and industrial rolling steel door solutions to professional dealers, retailers, homeowners, architects, builders, business owners and facility managers.
