If your existing garage door doesn’t have windows then you may not even be thinking about them as a design option when it’s time to replace your door.

These before and after photos show the amazing difference adding windows to your garage door can have on your home’s curb appeal.

These homes used to look like every other house on the block. The original garage doors were a wall of solid steel and frankly, made the homes feel closed off when you pulled in the driveway.

The addition of carriage house garage doors added instant charm, but the decorative windows “opened up” the garage area with natural light and architectural detail.

Choose Elegant Shapes for Glass in Your Garage Doors

There are plenty of garage door window styles to choose from.

Many builders and architects use curved openings on windows and doors to make homes feel less boxy. In this example, arched windows with clear glass follow the arc of the garage door opening to add visual interest and soften the horizontal lines of the stone and brick.
Design tip: Garage door windows should complement the shape and size of the other windows on your home.

Clopay® Garage Doors Featured on A&E TV Series “Fix This Yard”

Clopay garage doors played a prominent role in an exterior makeover of a Florida home on the A&E Network television series “Fix This Yard” that aired Saturday, May 18.

In the episode, a Florida couple is trying to sell their lakeside home but isn't getting any takers.  Part of the reason is that the all white ranch looks more like an industrial warehouse than a home sweet home. Their realtor decides to call in home improvement experts and series hosts Amy Devers and Alan Luxmore to give this property some much needed curb appeal to bring buyers through the door.

The upgrade includes replacing the existing, mismatched garage doors with Clopay’s low-maintenance Canyon Ridge® Collection Ultra-Grain® Series steel carriage house doors. The homeowners saw the doors featured in This Old House magazine and thought the faux wood finish and design would add warmth and character to their home’s stucco exterior. Clopay dealer Metro Garage Door of Central Florida managed the installation.

The Canyon Ridge Collection Ultra-Grain Series features a durable, low-maintenance steel base door with an Ultra-Grain wood grain paint finish. Composite polymer overlays molded from Clear Cypress boards are attached to the surface to create the carriage house designs.

Unlike wood, this garage door is moisture resistant, so it won’t rot, warp, or crack. But it still offers the intricate grain patterns and textures you’d expect to find on real wood. It’s also insulated with Intellicore® for year-round comfort and energy savings. Fourteen designs with optional windows and decorative hardware are available in either a Medium or Walnut stain finish. For information about these garage doors, visit canyonridgeultragrain.

Clopay’s Cypress Collection insulated flush panel steel garage door with Ultra-Grain® finish has been named one of the 101 Best New Products of 2013 by the editors of Professional Remodeler magazine.

The publication compiles the annual list based on a review of products that generated the most reader interest over the last 12 months and selects the ones that offer the best solutions for residential construction and remodeling pros. The winning products are featured in the August issue of the magazine and online at www.housingzone.com.

“Faux wood garage doors like the Cypress Collection have surged in popularity because they offer the warmth and character of wood without the upkeep. They are also significantly more energy efficient thanks to the durable, three-layer insulated steel construction,” says Pat Lohse, Clopay’s vice president of marketing.

Clopay’s proprietary Ultra-Grain finish simulates the appearance of stained wood on a steel door surface. But unlike real wood, it won't rot, warp, or crack.

The simplicity of the Cypress Collection’s flush panel design combined with the horizontal wood grain print is well suited to transitional, contemporary, Southwestern, and Mediterranean style homes.

The door is offered in either a Medium or Walnut finish. Complementing window frames, grilles, inserts and decorative hardware are also available.

Clopay® Avante Collection Scores Repeat Performance as "Architect's Choice" Garage Door in Annual Magazine Survey

Each year the editors at Residential Architect magazine ask architects to share their top product picks for contemporary, transitional, and traditional design.

Clopay’s contemporary Avante Collection garage door is listed among Minneapolis-based architect Mark Larson’s favorites. In the July/August issue of the magazine he says, “A garage door may be the largest single assembly on a house’s façade, so choosing the right one is something of a high-stakes move. For overhead doors that complement his firm’s work, we specify Clopay’s aluminum-frame Avante Collection with glass panels. We love them because they’re modern and let a boatload of light in. When fitted with frosted glass panels, they provide privacy too.”

This isn’t the first time the Avante has been recognized as a “choice product” in the publication’s survey, and for good reason.  As architect David Banducci stated in the magazine’s 2008 round-up, Clopay’s aluminum-framed glass panel doors “make the garage an architectural feature instead of something we’d normally try to hide.”

Clopay introduced the Avante Collection in 2005 after seeing an uptick in orders of the commercial version for residential applications.

“The Avante was born out of consumer demand for an attractive contemporary garage door solution at a time when choices in the industry were extremely limited,” says Pat Lohse, Clopay’s vice president of marketing. “While the door’s clean lines and sleek design are definitely rooted in the modern market, it is increasingly showing up as an unexpected, yet welcome focal point on more traditional architectural styles including Craftsman bungalows, historic row houses, and log cabins,” she adds.

The Avante Collection is constructed of a durable, rust-resistant 2-1/8” commercial grade aluminum frame in many sizes. Multiple frame colors and window options including clear, mirrored, and frosted glass can be specified.

Survey Shows Carriage House Style Garage Door Continues to Increase in Popularity Clopay® Gallery® Collection Among Top 5 Models

No more plain vanilla garage doors for today’s homeowners. According to a report published by Door & Access magazine, one out of every five residential garage doors sold in North America today is a carriage house style door.

Clopay’s Gallery Collection ranks among the top 5 most popular carriage house style garage doors sold by professional dealers who participated in the magazine’s survey.

Carriage house garage door category sales have tripled since 2005 and now account for almost 19 percent of dealers’ residential sales.Door & Access reporters attribute the growth to several factors.

Thanks to innovations in technology, garage door manufacturers have been able to close the affordability gap and introduce low-maintenance, steel carriage house design options that look like high-end wood doors. Dealers say that steel is the most requested construction material for this reason.

Increased curb appeal and resale value are also key contributors to the growing popularity of carriage house doors. “Homeowners don't want their house to look like every other one on the block,” says Pat Lohse, Clopay’s vice president of marketing. “With so many different styles and colors available, carriage house garage doors are an easy and attractive way to make your exterior stand out.”

For those looking to add value to their homes, Remodeling magazine ranks garage door upgrades among the top 5 home improvement projects for return-on-investment, on average, nationwide. The most recent Cost vs. Value report shows that homeowners who spend between $1,500 and $2,700 on a new garage door can expect to recoup 75 percent of the cost at resale.

Clopay offers a variety of carriage house style garage door designs in steel, composite, and wood. The manufacturer recently receivedHome Builder Executive’s “2013 Gold Innovation Award” for its growing line of faux wood garage doors, which includes the Canyon Ridge® Collection Ultra-Grain® Series steel and composite carriage house door. View Clopay’s residential carriage house garage door designs.

Clopay® and Ned Sickels Overhead Doors Pitch in to Help Restore the Jersey Shore for THIS OLD HOUSE® Television Series

Months after Superstorm Sandy devastated shorelines on the East Coast, affected homeowners are still determining how to rebuild in a landscape of FEMA regulations, delayed building permits, and continued weather risks.

During the anniversary month of Sandy, PBS’ Emmy® Award-winning home improvement series THIS OLD HOUSE will premiere a special eight-episode series on October 3, 2013 focusing on three sets of homeowners rebuilding in Bay Head, Point Pleasant, and Manasquan, New Jersey.

As part of the series, residential garage door manufacturer Clopay partnered with Dana Clark, owner and president of Ned Sickels Overhead Doors, to support the rebuilding efforts of the Santos family, who own a 1950s Colonial located on an inlet.
Clark’s company is located five miles from the shore in Tinton Falls, NJ. When Sandy hit last fall, he was without power for three weeks. He considers himself lucky to have only suffered that inconvenience.

“The communities here just got hammered. I couldn’t believe the damage when we were finally able to leave our house and see what was going on,” says Clark. “A year later people are still waiting for insurance money to rebuild, if they were fortunate enough to have insurance.”

A 45-year resident of the community, Clark was happy to support the Santos family, who were hit hard. “They are acting as their own general contractors so I got involved early in the process to help them choose the best doors for their home and walk them through the framing requirements as they cut the rough openings,” says Clark.

Like most houses in the area, the Santos's had to be raised on pilings. The new garage doors are located on the first level.

Clark recommended Clopay’s Canyon Ridge® Collection Limited Edition Series carriage house doors. The overhead doors are constructed of a low-maintenance composite material that looks like real wood, but it won't rot, warp, or crack due to moisture.

Each door is two-inches thick and features Intellicore® technology for maximum durability, energy-efficiency and quiet operation. He also installed two new LiftMaster® openers.

“The carriage house garage doors match the style of the house as well as the new stained entry door,” adds Clark. “The Santos’s were so appreciative and easy to work with. It has been a great experience to be part of this project. I am glad that THIS OLD HOUSE is telling the story so people don’t forget and can benefit from the lessons learned when they build in the future.”

Clark’s company is still replacing garage doors on the homes of Sandy victims. He anticipates the calls will remain steady for at least another year as people continue the rebuilding process.

THIS OLD HOUSE: JERSEY SHORE REBUILDS will premiere nationally on PBS on October 3, 2013. (Checkwww.thisoldhouse.com/tvschedule or your local listings for times.) Viewers will be able to watch full new THIS OLD HOUSE episodes Sundays at 7 p.m. after each show premieres at www.thisoldhouse.com/watchTOH. Clopay® Garage Door Featured on DIY Network “Ice My House” Television Special

Clopay and Above and Beyond Garage Doors helped rapper turned home renovator Vanilla Ice transform an overgrown backyard into an urban oasis for a Queens, New York couple selected as the grand prize winners of the DIY Network’s "Ice My House" contest.

The makeover episode will air Tuesday, October 22 at 6 p.m. E/P on the DIY Network.

A few years ago the contest winners decided to purchase a fixer-upper in a neighborhood where they could be close to family. The couple started remodeling the inside, but with full-time careers they were running out of time and money to tackle the outside of the house. Winning the contest was a dream come true.

DIY and Vanilla Ice’s team of contractors spent 10 days upgrading the yard with items on the couple’s wish list including an outdoor kitchen, a pool and a gazebo. Clopay dealer Dennis Dubowski and his team also installed a Coachman Collection carriage house garage door as part of the $30,000 project.

The home’s detached garage is a prominent focal point of the backyard so it was important to upgrade the door to set the stage for the newly designed entertaining area. The carriage house design fits the architecture of the house much better than the original door. Most importantly, the homeowners are thrilled with the results.

Designer Vicki Payne Highlights Latest Garage Door Design Trends and Technology on PBS Television Series “For Your Home”

Clopay® partnered with dealer Cox Door Company in Indian Trail, N.C. to install a Canyon Ridge® Collection garage door as part of a whole house renovation project featured on “For Your Home” (FYH), one of the longest running national home and garden television series airing on PBS.

This season, design expert and show host Vicki Payne is sharing the ups and down of remodeling her Charlotte, North Carolina home.

Built in 1979, the house has great bones but requires a lot of TLC inside and out. The home’s exterior is getting a major facelift with the addition of new doors, windows, shutters and architectural moldings.

Payne selected a Clopay Canyon Ridge Collection faux wood carriage house door for the garage, which is the first thing guests see as they approach the house. Payne loves the look of wood and felt the historic charm of the carriage style door would fit perfectly with the home’s traditional style. But she didn’t want the hassle of ongoing maintenance and staining so she opted for a composite door that looks like wood, can be stained like wood, but won't rot, warp or crack like wood.

The door operates with the convenience of a LiftMaster® Model 8550 opener with MyQ® technology.

“For Your Home” is currently airing on PBS stations nationwide. Check your local listings for dates and times. The “Exterior Touches” episode 2906 can also be viewed online at http://www.foryourhome.com/2906-exterior-touches/.

Clopay Exhibiting New Garage Doors and Entry Doors at International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas February 4 – 6, 2014

$

Clopay is showcasing the hottest new garage door and coordinating entry door designs in booth #C1062 at the International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Las Vegas February 4 – 6, 2014.

Here’s a look at what’s trending this year and beyond:

1. Glamming up the garage - black is back!

Move over white garage doors, we'll be seeing a lot more glamour in the place we park our cars as new "cool paint" technology makes black a viable and dramatic color choice for steel garage doors. Look for it on Clopay carriage house and classic raised panel doors this spring.

2. Details that hold timeless appeal.

A recent industry survey shows that carriage house style doors are the "it look" among the garage door set, representing one out of every five residential doors sold today in North America. Sales in the category have tripled since 2005, when the Door and Access Manufacturers Association conducted its first survey to gauge the popularity of carriage style doors.

3. A breath of fresh air.

Residential builders and remodelers are continuing to take a cue from the commercial category, and looking for opportunities to create a more seamless relationship between interior and exterior living spaces. Clopay's Avante Collection aluminum and glass garage doorremains a popular choice for opening up kitchens, family rooms, and bedrooms at the press of a button. Closed, the door becomes a contemporary window wall, offering relative degrees of light and privacy.

The Avante can be seen on the 2014 New American Home during IBS.

4. Going all natural.

Natural wood is extremely popular as people skip the paint and opt for natural beauty. Besides offering a complete line of custom and semi-custom wood doors , Clopay has introduced four new insulated faux wood door collections that deliver the look of stained wood without the upkeep, making sustainability and energy-efficiency even easier.

5. Upgrades that pay you back.

Garage door and entry door upgrades continue to rank as one of the top 5 home value-adding projects, on average, nationwide, according to the 2014 Cost vs. Value report.

6. Sustainability isn’t an add on- it’s an expectation.

Clopay is the garage door sponsor of The 2014 New American Home (TNAH), the official showcase house of the International Builders’ Show, a 6,700-square-foot show home rising out of the foothills of the exclusive Sky Terrace housing development in Henderson, Nev.

From all levels, the contemporary home takes full advantage of the spectacular desert views and the Las Vegas Strip while offering cutting-edge energy efficiency and sustainability.

Designed by architect Jeffrey Berkus and constructed by Element Building Co., TNAH 2014 is expected to achieve Emerald status under the National Green Building Standard (NGBS).

The home will be open for tours at no charge to IBS attendees during the show.

Glamming Up the Garage: Clopay® Introduces Steel Garage Doors in Black

Move over white doors, in 2014 we'll be seeing a lot more drama and glamour in the place we park our cars as Clopay adds black to its steel garage door color wheel.

Painting a steel door black used to be a no-no, but new thermal reflective "cool paint" technology reduces heat absorption and retention, making hot surfaces and risk of thermal bowing a thing of the past.

Clopay's factory-applied black paint finish will be available on the Gallery® Collection and Classic Collection doors with Intellicore® insulation technology in March. Visit /residential-garage-doors.aspx to see design options, which include matching decorative windows and hardware.
